Luke 2:1-14 tells one account of the birth of Jesus. For space we will not quote it but be sure to read it. It should be brought out that the Jesus was born in a manger because there was no room at the inn. Why would God allow Jesus to be born into poverty, since it is, according to Paul, a spirit of the devil?
There is very little known about his childhood, but we do know that Joseph, Jesus earthly father (respectfully), was a carpenter. We also know that Jesus was found in the temple at age 12 listening to the teachings and asking questions. After that we are led to his baptism, and then to his ministry. There is little known about our Lord in between these events.
We know Jesus was born to Mary (a virgin), but did he have a life or existence before his birth?
In Revelation 19:13 John writes this: "...his name is called The Word of God." Revelation 3:14 tells us Jesus is "...the beginning of the creation of God". Paul writes this in Colossians 1:15: "Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature".
So now we know that Jesus was the firstborn (beginning) of all creation and that he is also the Word of God. That leads us to 1John 1:2: "...which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us." John 1:14 mentions this: "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us."
"In the beginning" was written in Genesis because that was the beginning of this world as we know it, but creation began a long time before Genesis. The "Word" (Jesus) [logos] had his beginning with God before time, transcending time. The "Word" was and still is sharing existence with God and thus shares also in the divinity and sovereignty of God.

In John 1:15 we read this, referring to John the Baptist: "John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me." Jesus earthly birth came after John the Baptist was born so this can only mean that John knew that Jesus had an existence before his birth.
But why did "The Word" come to this earth?
We all should be familiar with John 3:14-18. In this scripture the KJV uses the word "begotten", which in Greek (monogenes) refers to "only one," "very unique", and relates to Jesus being the revelation of the characteristics of God: God being made manifest through Jesus. The word "begotten" here is very important in that, if that word was not placed in scripture, the total meaning of the text would be lost. Jesus was not just God's son because he would be no more than Adam, as Adam was called a son of God. Jesus was, and is, much more than just a "son". This is because Adam was created of earth. Jesus was first a spirit being.
Because of this we can rightly say that Jesus was a heavenly being in human form, in the flesh. A person born of flesh alone could not accoplish what Jesus came here to do: because sin is in all flesh. Jesus came to this earth to become a redemption for our sins. In order to complete his mission he could not have sin within him.
